Biotic homogenisation in bird communities leads to large?scale changes in species associations

چکیده

The impact of global change on biodiversity is commonly assessed in terms changes species distributions, community richness and composition. Whether how much associations between are also changing less documented. In this study, we quantify large-scale patterns bird communities relation to We use network approaches build three community-aggregated indices reflecting complementary aspects association networks. characterise the spatio–temporal dynamics these using a high-resolution dataset co-abundances 109 monitored for 17 years (2001–2017) from 1969 sites across France. finally test whether spatial temporal networks related homogenisation estimated as turnover (?-diversity) generalism (community generalisation index). consistency relationships tested main habitats, namely woodland, grassland human settlements. document directional association-based response modifications space time. Weaker sparser were lower higher generalism, suggesting an overlooked aspect biotic affecting may have interactions. report that overall pattern not constant with opposite urban versus forest distinct processes. Although contain only partial signatures interactions, our study highlights translates finer structure by number, strength type associations.

Species richness declines and biotic homogenisation have slowed down for NW-European pollinators and plants

Concern about biodiversity loss has led to increased public investment in conservation. Whereas there is a widespread perception that such initiatives have been unsuccessful, there are few quantitative tests of this perception. Here, we evaluate whether rates of biodiversity change have altered in recent decades in three European countries (Great Britain, Netherlands and Belgium) for plants and...

Species–energy relationships and habitat complexity in bird communities

Allen H. Hurlbert* Department of Biology, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM 87131, USA *Correspondence: E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Species–energy theory is a commonly invoked theory predicting a positive relationship between species richness and available energy. The More Individuals Hypothesis (MIH) attempts to explain this pattern, and assumes that areas with greater food resou...

Temporal Changes in Randomness of Bird Communities across Central Europe

Many studies have examined whether communities are structured by random or deterministic processes, and both are likely to play a role, but relatively few studies have attempted to quantify the degree of randomness in species composition. We quantified, for the first time, the degree of randomness in forest bird communities based on an analysis of spatial autocorrelation in three regions of Ger...

Response of biotic communities to salinity changes in a Mediterranean hypersaline stream

BACKGROUND This study investigates the relationship between salinity and biotic communities (primary producers and macroinvertebrates) in Rambla Salada, a Mediterranean hypersaline stream in SE Spain. Since the 1980's, the mean salinity of the stream has fallen from about 100 g L(-1) to 35.5 g L(-1), due to intensive irrigated agriculture in the watershed. Furthermore, large dilutions occur occ...
